6 Wəlastəkwey/Wolastoqey Communities
Skicinowato-Skicinuwatu
In early 2016, there was a unified request made by the 6 Wəlastəkwey/Wolastoqey Chiefs of New Brunswick to the Provincial and Federal Governments to help revitalize the Wəlastəkwey Latowewakən/Wolastoqey Latuwewakon through an immersion effort. The importance of the language is paramount as it is at the core of cultural identity, which in turn, contributes to positive self-identities for our Wəlastəkwey/Wolastoqey youth. It has been proven that positive self-identities can create successful student outcomes. This unified request was brought on by the reality that the Wəlastəkwey Latowewakən/Wolastoqey Latuwewakon has been in crisis for some time; it lies on the brink of extinction, sitting on the dangerous end of the UNESCO Endangered Languages List.
